Description
Two hour (either group or private) tour of the Doge’s Palace in Piazza San Marco, the main piazza of Venice. The Doge was the ruler of the Venetian Republic and his palace was magnificently furnished with the largest artworks you will ever see. This tour walks you through (with priority entrance) the Palace of the Doge – the center of political power in Venice.
The history of the various rulers is fascinating and you will learn how the Venetian Grand Council, Senate and Doge ruled Venice and made the Republic famed throughout the world for its harmonious combination of monarchical, aristocratic and democratic principles. You will also hear tales of mystery, intrigue and learn the sinister side of the Republic of La Serenissima.
The palace itself is among the finest examples of Gothic art anywhere in the world, and its walls are sumptuously decorated with the largest paintings you will ever see, illustrating the entire history of Venice. At the end you will cross the bridge of sighs and enter down into the dungeon from which the famous Casanova, was one of the few men ever to escape.
