Pompeii was partially destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, and it was lost for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1749.
Since then, the huge archaeological excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy, with approximately 2,500,000 visitors every year.
After visiting Pompeii, we will head in to the national park of Mt. Vesuvius ( 10 min drive from Pompeii)stopping at a local winery for lunch. On arrival the owners will take you on a tour of the vineyards and wine cellar. Then whilst enjoying a spectacular view – on one side the island of Capri, behind you the dominating slopes of Mt. Vesuvius – you are invited to taste four of their best wines.
Two red and two white, their Rosé Prosecco, and two types of Grappa, one young and one aged in wooden barrels whilst enjoying a relaxing light lunch set in the middle of the vineyard.
Antipasta including local salami, cheese and bruschetta, followed by spaghetti (produced locally) in a tomato sauce, finishing with a regional dessert. After this relaxing lunch you will taken via private transfer back to your accommodation.
