Description
Maremma is the beautiful country of South Western Tuscany. This area has verdant green, rolling hills dotted with small villages and farmlands and sandy beaches. This is also a big archaeological area for Etruscan remains and tombs and the historical fortress of Populonia.
A great place for a holiday as it combines Tuscan country stays and the white beaches of the Argentario coastline so sea and country. You can also ski at Mount Amiata in the winter.
The Island of Elba off Piombino was where Napoleon was exiled to for ten months (which would not have been a punishment). The little seaside village of Castiglione della Pescaia is picturesque and a great place to stay in for Tuscan beaches.
The area is full of Etruscan ruins where the Etruscans made their seaside ports. Grosseto is a the main center of Maremma country. From here one can make day trips out to the many beautiful little villages.
In Maremma We Recommend…
Stay at one of our beautiful country retreats and make day trips out to visit the sites. At day at the beach is called for in this area and the sea is unpolluted, warm and without sharks!!
Visit the Etruscan ruins at Roselle where there is much to see as well as the castle at Populonia, a very ancient site in history.
Maremma has also a lot of natural spas and spring waters. Saturnia is noted for its wellness centers and therapy in the warm thermal baths. The benign climate allows wine to be produced and a wide range of both Alpine and Mediterranean flowers flourish here.
