Description
I had the pleasure of meeting the famous and extemely talented, Neapolitan (Napoletano) sculptor, Lello Esposito in his amazing studio in Palazzo San Severo, in the ancient quarter of Naples. Famous for his unique symbol of Pulcinello’s or St. Genaro’s head atop the “corne” the horn.
I was deeply moved upon viewing his work. I always judge how well something moves me when my breath is literally taken away. This happened upon entering the large room of the palazzo, filled with the exhibition of his large works.
There is nothing like seeing original work. I adore all types of sculpture and much admire those particular skills that require such hard and long labour especially the larger creations. Months and months of dedication to complete and some even years.
Lello was extremely kind, patiently explaining his work and is a very interesting and entertaining artist to speak with. He has many sculptures sold all around the world and has interesting pieces placed in public works all over Italy. He sells well in New York, has exhibited all over Italy and as well has represented Italy at the Venice Bienniale in the Italian pavillon.
His symbols created over 30 years of work, represent Napoli and especially Spaccanapoli – dead smack in the center of Napoli, the ancient quarter that has not changed for hundreds of years. He has the mask, the egg, the skull, the volcano of course, Saint Gennaro (the patron saint of Napoli) and the corne or horn in their different states of metamorphosis.
He also uses verious types of materials from bronze and aluminum and as well paints large canvases. All would be perfect to fill those large entrances of modern buildings, outside areas or large spaces. If you are looking for something different in the art world to buy – you can see his exhibitions and works here – www.lelloesposito.com
*Palazzo San Severo is also famous for the incredible work of art in Napoli – The Veiled Christ – Cristo Velato which I will feature in another blog.
