Description
Nestled along the banks of the Adige River, Verona lies about 80 km. north of Venice in Italy. It is the Veneto’s most-visited city, after Venice. Verona reached a cultural and artistic peak during the 13th and 14th centuries under the cruel and sometimes quirky della Scala, or Scaligeri family.
Verona remains in the heart of lovers of literature, due to William Shakespeare’s drama Romeo and Juliet. “There is no world without Verona walls”: the pen of Shakespeare has lent Verona fame and immortality with his tale of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo Montecchi (Montagu) and Juliet Capuleti (Capulet).
Walking through its narrow streets allows you to get in touch with its varied and fascinating past: traces of its splendid Roman origins; its prevailing medieval structure dating back to the time of knights and castles, its magnificent Renaissance palaces as well as the impressive fortifications which protect it.
Verona is renowned for its wonderful Operas in the ancient Roman Arena in the Piazza Bra.
On a lovely summer night, it is a great experience to see one of the great operas of the season: Nabucco, Aida, Tosca, Carmen, Rigoletto and Romeo and Juliet under the stars. The elliptical shape of the Arena, produces perfect acoustics from every stand point.
During Roman times, performances used to take place in the centre of the amphitheatre – the “harena” (hence the name) was the area covered in sand where gladiatorial combats were held; the sand being used to absorb the blood of gladiators and animals.
